Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about the Action
Committee
Interested in
Joining the Action Committee?
- Have you ever wanted
to become active in the legislative political process and more
knowledgeable about the issues that drive it?
- Is the idea of working
with a committed group of individuals to further the public good
an attractive concept to you?
If you can answer “Yes”
to these questions, then perhaps YOU are the one we are looking
for! From a core group of four individuals during the interim, the
LWVOR Action Committee
expands considerably during each Legislative Session. We need a
cadre of volunteers to join us in those busy days to monitor hearings
(either in person or remotely over the Internet); meet with legislators,
aides or lobbyists; research issues; write letters; or deliver public
testimony. Membership in
the LWV is strongly recommended.

Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQ) about the Action Committee
Q: Does it take a lot of time?
A: No, it does not have to take a lot of your time. Like most volunteer
work, you can spend as much time as you have available on League
Action. An important rule of volunteer work is to only do what you
want to do (or are passionate about) and have time for. Otherwise,
you may get burnt out!
Q: Do I have to always
travel to Salem?
A: Not necessarily, and not all the time. Certainly, it is most
effective to meet face-to-face with people, but much of what the
Action Committee does can be done from your home, especially with
modern email and communications. If you have a broadband internet
connection, you can now view and/or listen to all legislative hearings
through the Internet. (See http://www.leg.state.or.us/listn/listenset.htm).
Even Action Committees meeting can be attended by speakerphone or
conference call. Furthermore, many legislative committees, commissions
or coalitions now meet outside of Salem at various times.
Q: What if I only want
to work on one issue narrowly related to a League position?
A: Great! Pick an issue! If every member would only do their little
bit and only what they are passionate about, then it would all magically
get done.
Q: The League is often
asked to recommend members as representatives for various commissions,
advisory committees and coalitions. If I have an interest in one
of these positions, how would I apply?
A: Just let us know of your interests!
