Voter Service

The LWV of Oregon serves voters by providing free, nonpartisan Voters' Guides that include audio, Spanish and easy-to-read versions. In addition, we train speakers to address election issues at community events and schools, provide candidate and ballot measure forums, and coordinate the Oregon Student Mock Election to prepare future voters. The LWV also works to protect every citizen in the right to vote.

Accountable Government

The LWV of Oregon observes and reports on statewide public meetings, including the Legislature, to remind our government that they are accountable to the people that elect them. We continually work to increase openness in government and citizen access to the decision-making process. We lobby on issues on which we have positions.

Quality Education

K-12: The LWV of Oregon believes each child should be provided with equal, adequate education, stably financed by the state, with local control of educational programs and local funding alternatives.
Postsecondary: The LWV of Oregon believes the primary goal of Oregon's public postsecondary education should be to provide a broad spectrum of higher education for professional, vocational, and personal enrichment to all qualified and motivated individuals.

Equal Rights

The LWV works to secure equal rights and equal opportunity for all in areas such as education, employment, poverty, discrimination, voting, women's issues, and meeting basic human needs. This photo of Alice Paul and others at the Metropolitan Opera House is provided by the National Constitution Center.

Protection of Natural Resources

The LWV believes that natural resources should be managed as interrelated parts of life-supporting ecosystems. Resources should be conserved and protected to assure their future availability. Pollution of these resources should be controlled in order to preserve the physical, chemical and biological integrity of ecosystems and to protect public health. In Oregon, the LWV works on issues such as air quality, off-shore and coastal management, energy conservation, nuclear energy, hazardous materials, land use planning, parks, seismic risks, solid waste, and water policy, planning, quality, and resources.

Leadership Development

League membership offers many opportunities to develop leadership skills such as public speaking, setting priorities, and coordinating volunteers. Featured in this photo is LWV of Portland member Beth Burczak, who served as president of the LWV of Oregon for the 2001-2003 term.

Social Justice

The LWV promotes social and economic justice so that no person or group shall suffer legal, economic or administrative discrimination. In Oregon, the LWV works on topics such as Farmworker Issues, Housing, Child Care, and Discrimination.

Study of Issues

Members of the LWV of Oregon study issues to provide detailed, reliable and carefully researched information on topics of concern to Oregonians, and to help members and citizens reach their own conclusions about these issues. Featured in this photo are LWV of Marion/Polk Counties members Pat Braun (d) and Janet Markee.
